Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
