Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
