Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
