Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
