A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.
The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
